Here's my super-quick, Andre's-Verse-Only-Edit of the new Gorillaz single "Do Ya Thing". Now I really like the idea of the Gorillaz project, the concept is genius, the visuals are amazing (love Jamie Hewlett's style), and I like the approach to recording where every album is an ensemble piece. It's a thoroughly modern musical concept. But when it comes to the music itself, I feel like the glimmers of genius are shaded by Damon Albarn's (and in this case James Murphy's) presence on the tracks.
Now I'm not hating - I own more than a few Blur albums - but with the Gorillaz tracks I feel the guest spots are so strong you just want them to stand on their own. Like on this latest track, I almost fell over when I heard Dre get on it. I just kept listening to his part over and over, so I thought it would be easier to just cut it. This whole thing is just a fancy time-saver.
